Modern dental implants have been around since the 1970s, but they’ve improved significantly since those early days. They are one of the best tooth replacements because they look and feel very similar to a natural tooth. What are they exactly? How versatile are they?

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post. It’s biocompatible, so when we surgically place it in your gums as a replacement tooth root, it fuses to your jawbone. This becomes the anchor for an artificial tooth. Depending on what type of dental implant you’re getting (single, multiple, full arch), the process can take between 6-8 months.

Dental Implants Work in a Variety of Situations

If you need to replace just one tooth, the implant procedure is fairly quick and simple. For multiple teeth, the implants create a “fixed bridge” that connects to a series of crowns called a “stable bridge.” If you’re missing a full arch of teeth, we can perform a full mouth restoration. This is a more stable alternative to removable dentures. Dr. Sitaram or Dr. Weida can also place a few implants to stabilize a set of removable dentures if you don’t want to replace each tooth with an individual implant.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are a permanent solution to tooth loss and more stable than traditional tooth replacements. They are also easier to care for. Simply brush and floss like you would your real teeth! The other major benefit of dental implants is that by replacing a missing tooth root, you prevent your jawbone from shrinking.
