Tips to Create Great Oral Habits for Your Kids

Our kids are always picking up new habits from us—whether we want them to or not. These habits can include everything from what we say to how we eat, which means that our children are also looking at how we take care of our dental health. Here are some ways you can set a positive example for your child and help instill great oral health habits they can take with them into adulthood.

Join Up for Brushing Time

Even if your child is too young to brush their teeth on their own, you can have them in the bathroom with you while you brush your teeth so they can watch what you’re doing and how long you’re brushing for. Just this simple act of watching you may make them interested in it and want to copy you! Then when they’re old enough to brush teeth on their own, you can do it together in the same bathroom so they can follow what you’re doing and you can ensure they’re starting off with proper technique from the get-go.

Let Them Add Some Personal Style

Remember when you were young and totally obsessed with a certain TV or movie character and wanted all your gear and toys to have them on it? Nowadays, there are so many options when it comes to kids’ toothbrushes, chances are you’ll be able to find one with a character that your child loves. Either ask them what character they want or take them to the store with you so they can choose one themselves. That extra touch can make them even more excited to use their toothbrush at home, which is a great thing for their oral health.

Use an App or a Song

If you need some extra help getting your kid to brush their teeth enough, consider finding a children’s dental app for your phone or iPad. An app can make dental care feel more like a fun game rather than a chore and help keep them accountable with their at-home routine. Another option is to find a song they love that’s roughly two minutes long so you can teach them to brush for the whole duration of it. Two minutes can seem like an eternity for a young kid, but if they have an awesome song to listen to, it’ll make tooth-brushing time go by without a hitch!
